The Hobson West Board Neighbors UPDATE!
Planning Commission Case # 1564
(previous cases are #1460 and #1475)

Letter To The Editor: Rec Center and Ponds of Hobson West

The inconsistent use of public surveys and petitions by our elected officials is impossible to understand.   The Park District is ready to invest $35 million in a Recreational Center based on a 2005 survey of 884 households.   Less than 20% of those surveyed said indoor facilities are a high priority, while 52% favored outdoor walking and biking trails.   And yet when contacted by the city the Park District expressed no interest in purchasing (at a cost of less that 10% of the proposed rec center) a six acre sit which is already surrounded on THREE sides by existing Park Property.

This property would become the missing piece for a complete 14-15 Park which can be more fully developed and utilized.   Ball fields are not the only activities that kids can or want to participate in.   The Ponds of Hobson West Parks could provide for more walking trails, bike paths, wetlands and general nature center, fishing programs, and other kid oriented programs.   As it is the existing two parcels are not heavily utilized.

During 2006 some neighbors collected 1,061 signatures from 699 households (over 80% of the households contacted) that are within about a mile radius of the property.   While collecting the signatures a common theme was ...if it cannot be kept as is, or open space, or expanded Park Land then let us at least keep it zoned for single family.

Here we have 699 households in a small area immediately adjacent to existing park land who would like to see the existing park land expanded and their opinion is being ignored, while 884 households throughout the city is being used as the justification to spend $35 million.   Strange!

Of course, even stranger is the action of the City Council which is ignoring the expression of opinion of the 1,061 people from the 699 households to retain the single family housing zoning and have voted to change the zoning to multi-family and allow 22 townhouses.
